New Delhi : India and Cyprus elevated their bilateral ties to a Strategic Partnership during the State Visit of President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, to India. The visit marked a significant step forward in strengthening cooperation across sectors including defence, technology, education, culture, maritime security, and digital innovation.
During the visit, both countries signed a series of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and key agreements aimed at deepening collaboration in strategic and emerging areas. Among the major agreements signed was an MoU for the establishment of a Joint Working Group on counter-terrorism, reflecting the shared commitment of India and Cyprus towards combating terrorism and enhancing global security cooperation.
An MoU was also signed between the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service and the Diplomatic Academy of Cyprus to strengthen cooperation in diplomatic training and capacity building. In the technology sector, both sides signed an agreement between the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy of Cyprus and India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to promote collaboration in innovation and emerging technologies.
Further expanding bilateral cooperation, a Technical Arrangement was concluded between the Larnaca Joint Rescue Coordination Center of Cyprus and India’s Ministry of Defence for coordination and cooperation in Search and Rescue (SAR) matters. In the field of education, both countries signed an MoU to promote cooperation in higher education and research between the respective education ministries.
India and Cyprus also signed a Cultural Cooperation Agreement for the period 2026-2030 to strengthen cultural exchanges and people-to-people ties between the two nations.
Several important announcements were also made during the visit. Both countries announced the elevation of their relationship to a Strategic Partnership and unveiled a Roadmap for Defence Cooperation for the period 2026-2031. India and Cyprus also agreed to establish a Cyber Security Dialogue and a Consular Dialogue to strengthen institutional cooperation.
In a significant maritime and regional development, Cyprus announced its decision to join the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative under the pillar of “Trade, Connectivity and Maritime Transport,” further enhancing cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
India also announced the gifting of a Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog Hita & Maitri (BHISM) Cube to Cyprus as part of humanitarian and health cooperation initiatives. Additionally, both countries celebrated the first-ever India-Cyprus Space Day on May 18, 2026, highlighting growing collaboration in the space sector.
Another key development during the visit was the announcement by the Cypriot side regarding its intention to establish a Cyprus Trade Center in Mumbai to strengthen trade and investment relations between the two countries.
The visit is being viewed as a major milestone in India-Cyprus relations, paving the way for enhanced cooperation in strategic, economic, technological, educational, and cultural domains.
