New Delhi: Secretary (West) Sibi George met United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed and held wide-ranging discussions on India–UN cooperation and collaboration on a range of global issues.
The discussions covered joint efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), manage the transformative impact of artificial intelligence, strengthen peacekeeping operations, address climate change, reduce disaster risks and advance reform of the United Nations. India’s cooperation with the UN on the SDGs is guided by the UN 2030 Agenda and focuses on translating global goals into national and local development priorities. Key areas of cooperation include poverty reduction, healthcare, education, gender equality, clean energy, sustainable cities, climate action and inclusive economic growth.
India has also supported development partnerships in other developing countries through the India–UN Development Partnership Fund. The fund finances projects aimed at promoting sustainable development, particularly in least developed countries, landlocked developing countries and small island developing states.
The meeting also highlighted India’s longstanding contribution to UN peacekeeping operations and its emphasis on improving the safety and effectiveness of peacekeeping missions. India has consistently called for greater participation by troop-contributing countries in discussions on peacekeeping mandates.
The discussions reflected India’s continued engagement with the United Nations on sustainable development, emerging technologies, global peace and security, climate resilience and efforts to make multilateral institutions more representative and effective.
