New Delhi: Indian women athletes have emerged as the driving force behind Team India’s outstanding campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026, winning eight of the country’s 13 gold medals and reaffirming India’s growing stature in international sport.
The remarkable performances across weightlifting, para athletics, judo and boxing have highlighted the depth, resilience and consistency of Indian women athletes on the global stage.
Olympic champion Mirabai Chanu once again showcased her class by securing a Commonwealth Games gold medal, while Sharmila Dhankar struck gold in para athletics. Asmita Dey created history by becoming India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games judo gold medallist, marking a major milestone for Indian judo.
India’s women boxers also delivered a dominant performance. Sakshi Chaudhary, Preeti Pawar, Jaismine Lamboria, Priya Ghanghas and Arundhati Choudhary all clinched gold medals, underlining India’s emergence as a global force in women’s boxing.
Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President Dr. P. T. Usha congratulated the athletes, saying their achievements reflect years of hard work, determination and the growing confidence of women sportspersons across the country.
She said the success of India’s women athletes is the result of the dedication of the players, their families, coaches and support staff, adding that every medal tells a story of perseverance and sacrifice while inspiring millions of young girls to pursue excellence in sport.
The IOA noted that the achievements also reflect the broader transformation taking place in Indian sport, driven by greater investment in athlete development, improved training facilities, enhanced support systems and initiatives aimed at encouraging greater participation of women in sports.
According to the IOA, the performances of India’s women athletes at the Commonwealth Games extend far beyond medal counts. Their success has become a source of inspiration for aspiring athletes across the country, proving that talent, determination and opportunity can propel Indian women to the highest levels of international competition.
