New Delhi : Piyush Singh, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Power, stated that during the crisis, the government issued directions under Section 11 to ensure full operational capacity of imported coal-based power plants. This step added nearly 4,000 MW of power generation, including output from Tata Power CGPL Mundra.

He further informed that planned maintenance activities have been deferred for three months, resulting in an additional availability of around 10,000 MW. Strong coordination among stakeholders has helped maintain coal stock levels at approximately 55 million tonnes, which is sufficient for about 19 days of consumption.

Looking ahead, the government has planned to add nearly 22,000 MW of capacity over the next three months across thermal, solar, wind, and hydro power sources. Despite gas-based power contributing a limited 1.4 percent to the overall energy mix, such plants continue to operate. They have also been permitted to import LNG to support power generation, ensuring stability in the country’s overall electricity supply.
