New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has invoked India’s electoral system while renewing his call for the passage of the SAVE America Act, which seeks to strengthen voter identification and citizenship verification requirements in US federal electionsas international media reported .
According to media reports in a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said that India’s Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar had earlier asked the US administration how elections could be conducted in the United States without a valid photo ID.
Trump highlighted India’s 2024 general election, stating that it involved 646 million voters, with less than 1% voting by mail, and claimed that every voter was required to have a valid photo identity document. He then urged Congress to pass the SAVE America Act.
The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, also referred to as the SAVE America Act, proposes requiring documentary proof of US citizenship for registration to vote in federal elections, along with voter identification requirements. The legislation has become a major point of political debate in the United States.
Trump’s remarks also drew support from US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, who said that India’s election system demonstrated that large-scale elections could operate with voter identification requirements.
