Washington, D.C.: Indian-American Congressman Ro Khanna has blamed former US President Donald Trump for the recent deterioration in India-US ties, arguing that Washington’s foreign and trade policies have undermined a relationship built on decades of mutual trust.
Speaking at the USISPF Leadership Summit, Khanna said the trust between India and the United States, nurtured over many years, has been significantly eroded under Trump’s leadership.
He criticised the Trump administration’s decision to become involved in the conflict with Iran, saying the move was taken without adequate consultations with key allies. “Trump’s policies of getting involved in a war with Iran have been extremely damaging. We pushed it forward without consulting our main allied countries,” Khanna said.
The California Democrat also took aim at Washington’s trade approach, contending that recent tariff and economic policies have strained bilateral ties with New Delhi. According to Khanna, the current state of US-India relations is the weakest it has been in nearly three decades.
He stressed the need for renewed diplomatic engagement and policy coordination to restore confidence and strengthen the strategic partnership between the two democracies.
