New Delhi : During the debate on the no-confidence motion against the Speaker in the Lok Sabha, Congress leader K. C. Venugopal expressed serious concerns about the functioning of Parliament and the state of democracy in the country.

Speaking in the House, Venugopal said he felt deeply troubled while rising to support the motion, stating that the Opposition had been compelled to take such a step due to repeated instances that, according to him, had gradually undermined the dignity of the Lok Sabha since 2019.

He alleged that never before had a Leader of the Opposition been “so openly silenced” in Parliament. Without naming him directly, Venugopal referred to the Leader of the Opposition, saying he is often targeted because he raises uncomfortable questions for the government and speaks openly on sensitive issues.

The Congress MP further claimed that in recent years opposition members have frequently faced suspension, their microphones have been switched off during debates, and parliamentary broadcast coverage often avoids showing the Opposition benches.

Venugopal also accused the ruling party MPs of being allowed to violate parliamentary norms without facing consequences, alleging that they are given the freedom to make harsh remarks and disregard House rules.

He argued that holding a majority in Parliament does not give the government the authority to override democratic traditions and institutional norms.

According to him, the Opposition moved the motion because a democracy cannot function effectively if its highest legislative body is perceived to be operating in a partisan manner. Venugopal concluded by saying that the country needs a Speaker who remains fair, impartial and fully committed to democratic principles.
