New Delhi : Tensions between the United States and Spain have escalated after US President Donald Trump warned that Washington could halt trade relations with Madrid. The statement came during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the Oval Office, highlighting growing strains in US-EU relations and global diplomacy.

Trump’s remarks followed Spain’s refusal to support US and Israeli military actions targeting Iran, signaling a widening divide among Western allies over the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.

Spain’s Position on Military Support

Spain’s Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares stated that Madrid would not permit the use of American military bases located in southern Spain for operations that fall outside the framework of the United Nations Charter. He also clarified that these bases were not used in the recent strikes on Iran.

Spain has additionally resisted pressure to increase defense spending within NATO, maintaining that its policies remain aligned with international law, diplomatic commitments, and existing trade agreements.

Impact on Global Trade and Diplomacy

Analysts note that any attempt by Washington to cut trade ties with Spain could face legal and diplomatic hurdles because Spain’s international trade arrangements are negotiated through the European Union.

The dispute has raised concerns about the future of transatlantic relations, global trade dynamics, and the role of economic pressure in military and foreign policy decisions. Experts say the situation could influence international diplomacy, NATO cooperation, and US-EU economic ties in the coming months.
