Police says quarterly extension of detention powers under National Security Act was a routine administrative process issued before protests began

New Delhi : The Delhi Police has issued an official clarification regarding reports circulating on social media that the renewal of powers under the National Security Act (NSA) was carried out specifically in connection with the ongoing CJP protests. The police termed such claims misleading and clarified that the order was part of a routine administrative procedure.

In its statement, the Delhi Police said that misinformation was being spread claiming that the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, had been granted detention powers under the NSA with the intention of suppressing the ongoing protests.

Clarifying the matter, Delhi Police stated that the order being referred to is a regular quarterly renewal of powers under the National Security Act, which is renewed every three months as part of the established administrative process.

According to the police, the latest renewal order was issued on 7 July 2026 and remains effective for the period from 19 July 2026 to 18 October 2026. The police emphasized that the renewal process was completed before the commencement of the CJP protests and was not initiated in response to any recent developments.

The Delhi Police further stated that no special request or separate order was issued in connection with the ongoing protests. The renewal, it said, should be viewed only as a standard administrative exercise and should not be linked with the current protest activities.

“Claims circulating on social media are misleading and are based on a misinterpretation of the routine renewal order,” the police said in its clarification.

The Delhi Police has appealed to citizens to avoid believing or forwarding unverified information and urged people to rely only on official sources for accurate updates.

The police reiterated that authentic information regarding security measures, legal provisions, and administrative decisions should be obtained through official communication channels rather than unverified social media posts.
