New Delhi : Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps intercepted a Pakistani-linked cargo vessel Selen, preventing it from transiting the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz over alleged regulatory violations, in a move that carries broader geopolitical implications.

Vessel Turned Back Over Clearance Issue
According to Iranian authorities, the vessel was denied passage for failing to obtain mandatory legal clearance. AIS tracking data showed that the ship, which had departed from Sharjah on March 23, abruptly altered its course near the Strait and returned to the Gulf.

Iranian state media Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting quoted IRGC Navy Chief Alireza Tangsiri as saying that the vessel did not comply with established maritime regulations, prompting authorities to deny transit.

Strict Maritime Rules Enforced by Iran
Officials reiterated that all vessels passing through the Strait must secure prior approval from Iranian authorities, underlining Tehran’s strict enforcement of navigation protocols in the region.

The Selen (IMO: 9208459), a feeder containership sailing under the flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis, is reportedly managed by Dubai-based Exceed Oceanic Trading LLC.

Geopolitical Context: Pakistan’s Mediation Offer
The incident comes at a sensitive time when Pakistan has expressed willingness to mediate between Iran and the United States.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recently stated that Islamabad is ready to facilitate dialogue and work towards de-escalation. His remarks were also shared on social media by former U.S. President Donald Trump, though Washington has not officially confirmed participation in such mediation.

Iran Signals No Immediate Talks
Despite these diplomatic signals, Iran has maintained that no negotiations are currently underway and reiterated its stance on continuing its strategic posture, suggesting limited appetite for immediate dialogue.
