New Delhi : A sharp political exchange unfolded in the Lok Sabha after the Opposition moved a no-confidence motion against the Speaker, prompting strong criticism from BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad.

During the debate, Prasad questioned the justification for bringing such a motion and asserted that there could be no compromise when it comes to the Prime Minister of India. He also criticized Opposition leaders for relying on references that, according to him, lacked credibility.

Prasad took a swipe at Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, pointing out that he had repeatedly cited a book during the debate that has not yet been published. He questioned how a work could be considered authentic before even going to print.

The BJP leader also targeted Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, recalling previous debates on no-confidence motions in the House and stressing the importance of parliamentary traditions.

In a sarcastic remark, Prasad said Rahul Gandhi appeared unaware that jalebis are not manufactured in factories, adding that only those leaders who had made specific statements should be quoted in the discussion.

Earlier in the debate, Rahul Gandhi defended himself against what he described as baseless allegations raised in the House. Addressing the Speaker, he said the discussion concerned the democratic functioning of Parliament and the role of the Chair.

He stated that the House represents the voice of the people of India and not just a single political party. Gandhi also complained that opposition members are often prevented from presenting their views during parliamentary proceedings.

The session was being chaired by Dilip Saikia, who informed the House that Rahul Gandhi would be given an opportunity to speak after Ravi Shankar Prasad concluded his remarks.

Following Gandhi’s speech, Prasad responded with a sharp counter-attack, further intensifying the political confrontation between the ruling party and the Opposition during the debate.
