New Delhi :Iran has claimed that more than 1,300 civilians have been killed in airstrikes carried out by the United States and Israel, according to Amir Saeed Iravani, Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations.
Speaking to reporters at the UN headquarters in New York, Iravani said that at least 1,332 Iranian civilians, including women and children, have lost their lives, while thousands of others have been injured in the attacks. Citing figures from the Iranian Red Crescent Society, he added that more than 180 children are among the victims and that over 20 schools across Iran have suffered damage.
The Iranian envoy accused the US and Israel of deliberately striking civilian areas and critical infrastructure, alleging that the attacks demonstrate a complete disregard for international norms and humanitarian principles.
According to Iravani, several Iranian cities have been subjected to indiscriminate airstrikes, with densely populated residential areas and essential public facilities coming under attack. He claimed that such actions could amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity under international law.
The ambassador also stated that 13 healthcare facilities have reportedly been targeted during the strikes. In addition, he alleged that sports and entertainment venues in Tehran and other cities were attacked on Thursday, resulting in the deaths of more than 18 female athletes and injuries to nearly 100 others.
Iravani said the alleged objective of the attacks was to create fear among civilians and cause widespread destruction, rejecting claims that only military installations were targeted.
He further stated that Iran would continue to exercise its right to self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter until the attacks stop. According to him, Iran’s response is “legal, necessary and proportionate” and is directed only at military facilities belonging to the aggressors.
“Iran does not seek war, but it will never compromise on its sovereignty,” Iravani said, adding that the country would take all necessary measures to defend its people, territory and independence.
