Gurugram : A high-level review meeting was held at the Municipal Corporation Gurugram office under the chairmanship of Municipal Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya to assess the implementation of the 2026 annual action plan aimed at controlling air pollution in the city. Senior officials from multiple departments attended the meeting and presented updates on their respective strategies and progress. The Commissioner directed all departments to strictly adhere to the quarterly targets assigned to them.

Target to Cut Particulate Matter by 15–20%

During the meeting, key issues related to the Haryana State Pollution Control Board were discussed. Officials were instructed to take strict action against illegal tyre recycling units, unauthorised industries and construction activities violating norms under the Environment Protection Act, 1986.
Cities have been given a target of reducing particulate matter levels by 15–20 percent by 2026. Inspections were also carried out at industrial units operating without mandatory clearances such as Consent to Establish (CTE) and Consent to Operate (CTO), and non-compliant units were directed to shut down.

Focus on Traffic Congestion and Parking Management

Traffic police were asked to identify toll plazas and major congestion points in the city and prepare a comprehensive decongestion plan. Authorities also stressed the need to survey parking utilisation and remove encroachments. Officials informed that an ANPR-based automated challan system is being implemented as part of the Integrated Traffic Management System under the Smart Cities Mission.

Expansion of City Bus Fleet

Officials from Gurugram Metropolitan City Bus Limited stated that the city requires nearly 1,000 buses, while only about 150 are currently in operation. A phased expansion plan is being prepared in line with guidelines of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The proposal to procure 200 additional buses has been discussed by the High Power Purchase Committee, and the new buses are expected to arrive by the end of April.

Road Repairs and Anti-Smog Measures

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority was instructed to ensure that potholes are repaired within 48 hours and to develop a plan for planting native species along roadsides. The process of hiring 30 truck-mounted anti-smog guns has also been expedited, while a target has been set to achieve 100 percent end-to-end road paving by October 2027.

Dust-Free Roads and Waste Management

Joint Commissioners of the Municipal Corporation were directed to intensify the Dust-Free Road Campaign and involve women self-help groups in waste collection and segregation. Authorities also emphasised preparing an RFP for a decentralised waste management model. Mechanised road sweeping, proper disposal of construction and demolition waste, and regular cleaning of open spaces were highlighted as key priorities.

Water Body Conservation and Green Initiatives

Officials informed that out of 74 ponds in the municipal area, 55 have already been developed while work on the remaining is underway. Directions were issued to ensure the cleaning and deepening of necessary ponds before the monsoon. A detailed action plan was also proposed for plantation and maintenance of native species to enhance green cover in the city.

Public Awareness Campaign

The civic body decided to launch a large-scale public awareness drive in collaboration with public representatives, resident welfare associations, industry bodies and universities. Special campaigns will focus on solid waste management, circular economy practices and sustainable packaging.

Multi-Departmental Coordination Emphasised

Departments including PWD, HSVP, NHAI, Engineering Wing, Swachh Bharat Mission and Horticulture were directed to submit phased action plans for 2025–26, 2026–27 and 2027–28. Officials were also instructed to participate in regular review meetings with action-taken reports to ensure timely implementation.

Municipal Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya said the administration has adopted a multi-pronged approach to tackle air pollution in Gurugram. The strategy includes strict enforcement against illegal activities, improved traffic management, expansion of green cover, efficient waste management and active public participation, with the aim of significantly reducing pollution levels by 2026.
