Decline in Challans, Rise in Awareness: Success of the CCTV Project on NH-44

Chandigarh : The CCTV and ANPR project implemented by Haryana Police on National Highway-44 has achieved remarkable success within one year in the fields of traffic discipline, road safety, and crime control. Effective implementation of the project has not only ensured strict control over traffic violations but has also brought about a visible positive change in public awareness towards traffic rules.

Record Online Challans in One Year Reflect Impact of Strict Enforcement

Director General of Police, Shri Ajay Singhal, stated that during the year 2025, a total of 4,84,617 online challans were issued on NH-44 through ANPR cameras. In 2025, a total of 6,64,054 challans were issued for over-speeding and 12,126 challans for using mobile phones while driving, whereas in 2024 this number stood at 6,733. As a result of these strict enforcement measures, effective control over traffic violations has been established and adherence to traffic rules among the public has increased.

Clear Indication of Growing Awareness Towards Traffic Rules

He further informed that during the initial phase of the project, in February and March 2025, approximately 50,000 online challans were being issued per month. However, due to sustained strict enforcement, technology-based monitoring, and extensive public awareness campaigns, the number has now reduced to an average of 30,000 challans per month. This monthly reduction of around 20,000 challans clearly indicates that the public is now taking traffic rules seriously and voluntarily complying with them, reflecting the effectiveness of the project.

Effective Role of the Project in Crime Control

The project has also played a significant role in crime control. With the assistance of the Central Control Room, 38 cases of theft, robbery, and snatching have been successfully solved. Additionally, alerts regarding 50 suspicious and crime-involved vehicles were sent to concerned districts, out of which 5 vehicles were apprehended in time, thereby effectively curbing criminal activities.

Launch of the Project and Extensive Deployment of Cameras

Additional Director General of Police, Traffic and Highways, Shri Hardeep Doon, informed that the project was launched on January 25, 2025, from the Central Control Room located in Karnal. Under this project, a total of 128 state-of-the-art cameras—including 72 ANPR, 18 evidence, and 38 surveillance cameras—have been installed at major and sensitive points on NH-44, from Kundli Border (Sonipat) to Shambhu Border (Ambala). These cameras have been integrated with the Haryana Police Intelligent Traffic Management System.

Strong Coordination of Technology and Human Resources

The success of the project is attributed to AI-based high-accuracy cameras, a robust IT infrastructure, and a trained police and technical team working round-the-clock at the Central Control Room, Karnal, ensuring smooth and continuous operation of the project.

Cashless Treatment Scheme Provides Major Relief to Accident Victims

The DGP stated that under the cashless treatment scheme implemented for road accident victims, 4,181 persons have so far been provided free treatment up to ₹1.5 lakh. This life-saving initiative during the ‘Golden Hour’ is a successful example of effective coordination among Haryana Police, the Health Department, and empanelled hospitals.

DGP’s Appeal to the General Public

Appealing to the public, Director General of Police Shri Ajay Singhal said that road safety is not only the responsibility of the police but a collective responsibility of every citizen. He urged drivers to adhere to prescribed speed limits, follow lane discipline, refrain from using mobile phones while driving, and mandatorily use helmets and seat belts. The DGP emphasized that Haryana Police is continuously striving to make traffic management safer and smoother through technology, but the real success of these efforts is possible only when citizens themselves follow traffic rules. A little caution not only protects one’s own life but also ensures the safety of others.
