New Delhi : Justice Surya Kant has become the new Chief Justice of India. President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to him as CJI on Monday (November 24, 2025). He was sworn in as CJI in the presence of Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, BJP President J.P. Nadda, former President Ram Nath Kovind, and former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar.
Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai’s term as CJI ended on November 23, 2025. He held the post for six and a half months. Justice Surya Kant’s tenure as CJI will be approximately one and a half years. He will retire on February 9, 2027. He is currently 63 years old.
CJI Surya Kant was born on February 10, 1962, in Hisar, Haryana. He came from a humble background. Former CJI B.R. Gavai, during his farewell address, spoke about his friendship with Justice Suryakant, noting that both came from humble backgrounds.
Justice Gavai stated that CJI Suryakant studied in a government school in Hisar, and that he himself attended a municipal school in Amravati, Maharashtra. CJI Suryakant graduated from the Government Postgraduate College in Hisar in 1981 and earned a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1984. He also studied law at Maharshi Dayanand University in Rohtak in 1984. He subsequently began practicing law in Hisar in 1984, and in 1985, he began practicing in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
In 2000, he became the youngest Advocate General of Haryana. In 2011, CJI Surya Kant earned a Masters in Law from Kurukshetra University, graduating with a First Class First with distinction. He was appointed Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in 2018 and subsequently appointed a Supreme Court judge in 2019.
