Skill Development and Health Facilities should be Better for Women Prisoners in Jail : Renu Bhatia

– Inspected Bhondsi District Jail, took stock of women barracks, kitchen, creche, sewing center and medical room

Gurugram : Haryana State Women Commission Chairperson Renu Bhatia on Monday visited the district jail in Bhondsi and thoroughly inspected the arrangements made by the jail administration for women. During this, she reviewed the status of schemes related to basic needs, hygiene, nutrition and rehabilitation of women prisoners.

During the inspection, Renu Bhatia first reached the jail kitchen, where she checked the quality of the food being prepared there and expressed satisfaction. She inquired about the process of making food, hygiene of the ingredients and the nutritional value of the food given to the prisoners.

After this, the Women Commission Chairperson visited the women barracks. Here she directly interacted with the women prisoners and inquired about their health, living conditions and the facilities being provided. She said that the environment for women prisoners should be such that it gives them mental peace and motivates them towards reform.

While inspecting the nursery creche set up in the women’s barrack, she distributed food packets to the young children and inquired about their nutritional level. She also visited the jail’s sewing training center and appreciated the skill development efforts going on there. She instructed the jail superintendent that all the women prisoners coming here should be trained in some vocational or technical field, so that they can become self-reliant after completing their sentence.

During the inspection of the medical room, she inquired about the health records, testing facilities and medicine distribution system of the women prisoners. The Women Commission Chairperson said that she would write a letter to the Civil Surgeon Gurugram and request that regular visits of the gynecologist should be ensured in the jail at least once a week, so that regular checkups and treatment of women prisoners can be done on time.

Renu Bhatia also suggested that the prisoners should also be connected with spiritual activities so that they become mentally empowered. He also said that the women prisoners who have recently come to the jail should be made aware about legal aid and their rights from time to time. After the inspection, he said that the cleanliness, quality of food and skill development training arrangements in the jail premises are commendable.

On this occasion, Jail Superintendent Naresh Kumar, Deputy Superintendent (Security) Sandeep Kumar, Deputy Superintendent (Administration) Satyabhan, Deputy Superintendent (Welfare) Sandeep Dangi, Dr. Pooja and other staff from the jail were present.
