Chandigarh, March 27th : Haryana Police has issued challans to over 1 lakh 21 thousand 312 vehicles so far for violating traffic rules through CCTV cameras installed on NH-44. Alongside, these cameras are also used to keep an eye on criminal activities, ensuring strict legal action against those who disrupt law and order.

This initiative, aimed at promoting road safety and developing a habit of following traffic rules among people, was launched by Haryana’s Director General of Police, Shatrujeet Kapur, from Karnal on January 25th. Under this, 128 CCTV cameras have been activated at 19 locations on National Highway No. 44 (from Ambala border to Kundli border in Sonipat) through the CCTV control room in Karnal. Among these, 9 locations have Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, and 12 locations have surveillance cameras. ANPR cameras are linked to Haryana Police’s Intelligent Traffic Management System to obtain the complete history of vehicles. All vehicles passing through this highway are monitored through these CCTV cameras, and challans are issued automatically to drivers violating traffic rules.

Director General of Police Shatrujeet Kapur stated that the objective of this initiative is to control traffic rule violations, assist in the investigation of crime-related cases, monitor vehicle flow, and generate alerts for hotlisted vehicles. This entire project has been integrated with the existing traffic management system, which will be upgraded periodically. He mentioned that the control room established in Karnal is also linked with data of hotlisted vehicles, such as stolen vehicles or vehicles involved in criminal activities, which is updated regularly. As soon as these vehicles pass through NH-44, an alert is sent to the concerned police station.

Mr. Kapur informed that 72 ANPR, 38 surveillance, and 18 evidence cameras have been installed on NH-44. These cameras are equipped with advanced technology. The launch of these cameras will also enhance the sense of security among drivers passing through this route, as alerts regarding vehicles involved in criminal activities, stolen vehicles, etc., will automatically reach the control room, and information will be sent to police stations as needed. Mr. Kapoor stated that such cameras have now been installed in 12 districts of Haryana, including Yamunanagar, Kurukshetra, Karnal, Ambala, Panipat, Rohtak, Panchkula, Gurugram, Mewat, Kaithal, Faridabad, and Sonipat.

It is noteworthy that there has been a decrease of 657 road accidents in 2024 compared to 2023. Additionally, there has been a reduction of 279 deaths and 432 injuries in road accidents in 2024 compared to 2023. Fatal road accident cases have also seen a decline, with 4389 cases in 2024 compared to 4652 in 2023, showing a 5.65% decrease. Similarly, Haryana Police conducts regular campaigns to ensure lane driving compliance in the state, issuing challans to 3,86,266 drivers for violating lane driving rules.

’DGP’s Appeal-’

Mr. Kapur appealed to the general public, stating that road safety is a crucial issue. The public should cooperate in making roads safer and drive vehicles within the prescribed speed limits. Haryana Police is organizing various competitions and activities to raise awareness about traffic rules, and people should participate in them. He also advised against using mobile phones while driving. A moment’s carelessness can be fatal not only for the individual but also for others.
