New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian in New Delhi, describing the interaction as particularly significant as it marked the Iranian President’s first visit to India.
Referring to their recent meeting in Bishkek, PM Modi said that productive discussions between the two leaders have continued from Bishkek to Delhi. The meeting focused on strengthening the longstanding India–Iran friendship and taking the relationship forward through a long-term and mutually beneficial strategy.
The two leaders also discussed the prevailing situation in the region. Amid continuing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, Prime Minister Modi reiterated that India remains firmly committed to dialogue, diplomacy and the pursuit of enduring peace.
The meeting assumes significance given the strategic importance of India–Iran relations. The two countries share longstanding civilisational and cultural ties, while their partnership also has an important strategic, economic and connectivity dimension. Iran’s location provides India with an important link to Central Asia and Afghanistan, particularly through the Chabahar Port, which supports India’s wider regional connectivity objectives.
President Pezeshkian’s first visit to India also provides an opportunity for New Delhi and Tehran to explore greater cooperation in trade, connectivity, energy, infrastructure and regional development, while maintaining close consultations on developments affecting regional peace and stability.
The engagement between PM Modi and President Pezeshkian underlines India’s effort to maintain strong and balanced relations with key partners in the region while advancing its broader vision of peace, stability and sustainable development.
