Imphal : Director General of Police (DGP), Manipur, Mukesh Singh, IPS, on Friday visited the 1st Battalion of the Manipur Rifles in Imphal, the state’s oldest and most historic battalion established 134 years ago. He was accompanied by the Additional Director General of Police (Law & Order/AP/Intelligence) during the visit.
During the visit, the DGP was briefed on the origins of the Manipur Police, which began with the raising of the 1st Manipur Rifles in 1892, and its evolution into one of the state’s most significant institutions. Officials highlighted the force’s role not only as a law enforcement agency but also as an integral part of Manipur’s historical, social and administrative development.
Mukesh Singh inspected several key facilities within the battalion, including the British-era Heritage Unit’s Quarter Guard, Manipur Police Officers’ Club, Banquet Hall, Motor Transport (MT) section, Parade Ground, Unit Church, Unit Temple, Canteen, and the DGP Petrol Pump.
The DGP also held an interaction with officers and personnel of the battalion, during which discussions focused on modernising the unit, strengthening operational preparedness and improving administrative efficiency. He stressed the importance of strict adherence to deployment protocols, regular inspections and effective compliance with established procedures.
During the meeting, officials exchanged ideas and feedback on initiatives aimed at upgrading the battalion’s infrastructure and implementing projects aligned with contemporary policing requirements.
Concluding the visit, the DGP instructed officers to maintain proper coordination, ensure timely reporting through the prescribed chain of command and strengthen communication with senior leadership. The visit was viewed as an important step towards preserving the battalion’s rich legacy while preparing it to meet the evolving challenges of modern policing.
