New Delhi : The Vice President of India and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, C. P. Radhakrishnan, on Wednesday released the book Tides of Time : Bharat’s History through Murals in Parliament, authored by Sudha Murty, at Samvidhan Sadan in New Delhi.
Speaking on the occasion, the Vice President praised Sudha Murty for vividly capturing the beauty and symbolism of the parliamentary murals, noting that they are not just artistic creations but powerful visual narratives of India’s civilizational journey. He said the murals reflect the country’s deep-rooted democratic traditions and cultural heritage.
Highlighting India’s democratic legacy, he referred to ancient systems ranging from Vaishali in the north to the Kudavolai system in the south, stating that these traditions underline Bharat’s identity as the “mother of democracy.” He emphasised that India’s ethos has always been rooted in dialogue, consensus, and respect for diverse viewpoints.
Quoting Subramania Bharati, the Vice President underscored India’s rich heritage of wisdom, inclusiveness, and cultural depth. He also appreciated the incorporation of traditional symbols in the Parliament building under the leadership of Narendra Modi, including the ceremonial Sengol, which he described as a significant link between India’s past and present.
Describing Parliament as the cornerstone of democracy, he said that dialogue, debate, and dissent are essential, but must ultimately lead to constructive outcomes in the national interest.
Calling the book a remarkable tribute to India’s civilizational journey, he noted that it brings history alive through 124 mural panels, covering periods from the Indus Valley Civilization to the teachings of great figures such as Maharishi Valmiki, Chanakya, Mahavira, and Gautama Buddha. It also highlights key historical milestones, including the rule of Ashoka and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, as well as cultural landmarks like the Konark Sun Temple and movements such as the Bhakti movement.
The Vice President added that the book pays homage to India’s freedom struggle, including events like the Dandi March and leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi and Subhas Chandra Bose.
Referring to the vision of Viksit Bharat @ 2047, he reiterated the principle of balancing development with heritage. He commended Sudha Murty for her contributions to public life, highlighting her journey from the corporate sector to social service and Parliament.
The event was attended by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Ministers J. P. Nadda and Manohar Lal, Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha Harivansh, Members of Parliament, and senior officials of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Secretariats.
