New Delhi : The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a disturbing media report highlighting the deaths of 16 people in Andhra Pradesh due to the consumption of adulterated milk. The incident has been reported from Lalacheruvu, Chowdeshwarannagar, and Swarupnagar areas of East Godavari district, where the fatalities have occurred since mid-February 2026. Additionally, at least four individuals with similar symptoms are currently undergoing treatment.
Toxic Substance Identified as Cause of Deaths
Preliminary reports indicate that the milk was contaminated with ethylene glycol, a highly toxic substance known to cause multi-organ failure. Authorities have traced the suspected source of contamination to a dairy unit in Narsapuram, which allegedly supplied milk to over 100 households in the affected region.
NHRC Issues Notice to Andhra Pradesh Authorities
Taking serious note of the matter, the Commission stated that if the media reports are accurate, the case represents a grave violation of human rights.
The NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police of Andhra Pradesh, directing them to submit a comprehensive report within two weeks.
The report must include:
- Current health status of affected individuals
- Progress of the investigation
- Details of compensation, if provided, to the victims’ families
Victims Reported Severe Health Complications
According to reports published on March 23, 2026, the health crisis began in mid-February when residents started experiencing serious symptoms such as:
- Abdominal pain
- Vomiting
- Anuria (lack of urine output)
- Acute kidney failure
Most of the victims were reportedly elderly individuals and young children, making the incident even more alarming.
