New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi said World Wildlife Day is an occasion to celebrate the planet’s rich faunal diversity and recognise the efforts of those working towards wildlife conservation. He emphasised the importance of sustainable practices and protecting natural habitats to ensure that wildlife continues to thrive.

The Prime Minister noted that India is home to some of the world’s most remarkable wildlife species. He highlighted that the country hosts more than 70 per cent of the global tiger population, has the largest population of the one-horned rhinoceros, and the highest number of Asiatic elephants. India is also the only country where the Asiatic lion continues to thrive in the wild.

Underlining the government’s commitment to wildlife protection, the Prime Minister pointed to several initiatives, including the establishment of the International Big Cat Alliance, which aims to promote collaboration and share best practices among nations. He also mentioned focused conservation programmes for species such as the Great Indian Bustard, Gharial and Sloth Bear, along with the ongoing cheetah translocation project.

Highlighting India’s cultural values, the Prime Minister said Indian scriptures advocate compassion and care for all living beings. He shared a Sanskrit Subhashitam that reflects the interdependence between forests and wildlife, explaining that forests protect tigers while tigers safeguard forests.

In a series of posts on social media, the Prime Minister reiterated India’s commitment to conservation, acknowledging the efforts of individuals and organisations dedicated to wildlife protection and emphasising the need to preserve biodiversity for future generations.
