Mumbai : Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s plane crashed before landing in Baramati. The plane caught fire upon impact and was completely destroyed. Five people, including Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, both pilots, and a security guard, died in the crash. Ajit Pawar was scheduled to attend three public meetings in Baramati today (January 28). After the crash, the plane was reduced to wreckage. Security agencies, police, and fire brigade teams arrived at the scene, and the fire was extinguished.

Following Ajit Pawar’s death in the plane crash in Baramati, Maharashtra, a wave of mourning has swept across the state. His funeral will be held on Thursday (January 28) at 11 AM with full state honors. This information was provided by the Maharashtra General Administration Department (Protocol).

During the three-day mourning period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast on all government buildings in Maharashtra where it is regularly hoisted. No government entertainment programs will be held during this time. All government offices in Maharashtra will remain closed on Wednesday (January 28, 2026).

A DGCA official stated that five people were on board the aircraft. A police officer said the plane crashed at 8:50 AM. Ajit Pawar’s body was identified by his watch.

Pilot Captain Sumit Kapoor and co-pilot Captain Shambhavi also died in the Baramati plane crash. Vidip Jadhav, who was part of Ajit Pawar’s security detail, was also present with him and died in the accident.

Prime Minister Modi expressed his deep sorrow over Ajit Pawar’s death in a post on X. He wrote, “Ajit Pawar was a grassroots leader. He was respected among the people as a hardworking individual. His passing is extremely sad and shocking.”

On Ajit Pawar’s death, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that this is a difficult time for the party and the family. We both have seen days of struggle together. Following Ajit Pawar’s death, the Maharashtra government canceled all official programs today. ​​Three days of state mourning have been declared in Maharashtra.

The investigation into the Baramati plane crash has intensified. A team from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) will visit the crash site to conduct an investigation. The team has departed from Delhi for Baramati.
