New Delhi : President of India, Droupadi Murmu, attended the convocation ceremony of the Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) in New Delhi on December 1 .

Speaking at the event, the President said that India is steadily becoming more self-reliant and strengthening its position in the global economy. She welcomed the decision of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade to designate the footwear sector as a ‘Champion Sector’ under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. She noted that the government is creating a supportive ecosystem and offering incentives to boost investment in this industry.

The President highlighted that India is the world’s second-largest producer and consumer of footwear. In 2024–25, India exported footwear worth over USD 2.5 billion, compared to imports of around USD 680 million—making exports nearly four times higher. She said that while India is already a major exporter, expanding the footwear industry further will create new opportunities for students as entrepreneurs and professionals.

President Murmu also appreciated the signing of an MoU between FDDI and the University of Northampton, calling it a significant step in strengthening India–UK cooperation under the Free Trade Agreement. She said the focus on sustainable materials and circular economy practices reflects the shared commitment of both countries to environmental protection.

Addressing the graduating students, the President emphasised that footwear design is a multidisciplinary field. She encouraged them to contribute to society by designing products that improve health and comfort, generate employment, support inclusive development, boost India’s exports, and represent India globally with high-quality products. She urged them to play a key role in advancing the vision of a self-reliant India.
