Mumbai : Taragiri (Yard 12653), the fourth ship of the Nilgiri Class (Project 17A) and the third built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilding Ltd (MDL), was delivered to the Indian Navy today, reinforcing India’s self-reliance in warship design and construction. Project 17A frigates are versatile multi-mission platforms, capable of addressing current and emerging maritime challenges.
Taragiri revives the legacy of the erstwhile INS Taragiri, a Leander-class frigate that served the nation with distinction from 16 May 1980 to 27 June 2013. This state-of-the-art frigate represents a significant leap in naval design, stealth, firepower, automation, and survivability, symbolizing India’s commitment to Aatmanirbharta in warship building.
Designed by the Warship Design Bureau (WDB) and supervised by the Warship Overseeing Team, Mumbai, Project 17A ships reflect a generational upgrade in indigenous ship design, combat capability, and survivability. Built under the Integrated Construction philosophy, Taragiri was delivered within envisaged timelines.
Equipped with advanced weapons and sensor systems surpassing the earlier P17 (Shivalik) class, Taragiri features Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion, a diesel engine and gas turbine driving Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPP) on each shaft, and a state-of-the-art Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS).
Its formidable arsenal includes the BrahMos SSM, MFSTAR and MRSAM complexes, 76mm SRGM, 30mm and 12.7mm close-in weapon systems, along with rockets and torpedoes for anti-submarine warfare.
Taragiri is the fourth P17A ship delivered in the past 11 months, with construction time reduced to 81 months compared to 93 months for the first-of-class Nilgiri, reflecting the experience gained from earlier ships. The remaining three Project 17A frigates—one at MDL and two at GRSE—are scheduled for delivery by August 2026.
With an indigenisation content of 75%, the project has engaged over 200 MSMEs, generating employment for approximately 4,000 personnel directly and over 10,000 indirectly. The delivery of Taragiri showcases India’s design, engineering, and shipbuilding capabilities while strengthening the Navy’s operational readiness.
