New Delhi : The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved two major railway projects with a total cost of around ₹2,781 crore. The projects are:

-Devbhumi Dwarka (Okha) – Kanalus Doubling – 141 km

-Badlapur – Karjat 3rd and 4th Line – 32 km

These projects will increase line capacity, improve train operations, and provide more reliable service for passengers and freight. The multi-tracking works will reduce congestion and streamline railway operations. They also align with PM Modi’s vision of a New India, promoting regional development and generating employment and self-employment opportunities.

Planned under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, these projects aim to improve multi-modal connectivity and logistics efficiency through integrated planning. They will ensure smooth movement of people, goods, and services.

The projects cover four districts across Maharashtra and Gujarat, adding about 224 km to the Indian Railways network. They will enhance connectivity for approximately 585 villages with a total population of around 32 lakh people.

The Kanalus–Okha doubling will improve access to the Dwarkadhish Temple, a major pilgrimage destination, and support the overall development of the Saurashtra region.

The Badlapur–Karjat 3rd and 4th line project is part of the Mumbai suburban corridor. It will meet future passenger demand, enhance connectivity to southern India, and improve local travel in Mumbai.

These railway routes are also vital for freight transport, including coal, salt, containers, cement, and POL (petroleum products). The capacity upgrade is expected to handle an additional 18 million tonnes per year.

Rail transport is energy-efficient and environment-friendly. These projects will help reduce oil imports by 3 crore litres, cut CO2 emissions by 16 crore kg, and support climate goals, equivalent to planting 64 lakh trees.
