Violent Protests and Arson in Nepal : Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli Resigns

New Delhi : Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned amid violent protests in Kathmandu over alleged corruption. Protests continue in Nepal against the ban on social media platforms. In Nepal, protesters set fire and vandalized the private residences of President Ramchandra Poudel and PM KP Sharma Oli on Tuesday. Apart from this, arson has also been done at the houses of former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, Sher Bahadur Deuba, Ramesh Lekhak, who resigned from the post of Home Minister yesterday, and Communications Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung.

On Tuesday, another minister of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s cabinet also resigned. Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Development Minister Ramnath Adhikari announced his resignation, saying that he could not continue in his post in view of the country’s suffering from violence.

Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Development Minister Ramnath Adhikari issued a statement on Tuesday saying that he resigned from his post. He said, “The violence has raised the question whether the current government is moving towards a totalitarian system.”

Earlier, Nepal’s Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak had resigned from his post.

Protests are continuing against the government’s violent response during the Gen-G demonstrations on Monday in and outside Nepal’s capital Kathmandu. At least 19 people lost their lives in this violence. On Tuesday also, sporadic protests were reported from different parts of Kathmandu. Due to this, the local administration has imposed curfew, prohibiting the gathering of people.

Three District Administration Offices (DAO) under the Home Ministry in Kathmandu issued separate notices and imposed curfew from morning at several places, including major entry points of the city.

The Kathmandu DAO on Tuesday imposed a curfew in the capital metropolitan area from 8:30 am for an indefinite period, prohibiting people from movement, demonstrations, meetings or sit-ins.
