New Delhi : Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has clarified that the issue of Japan’s Mogami-class warships was not discussed during the recent high-level engagements between India and Japan.
Responding to a media query on whether Japan would build Mogami-class warships in India, the Foreign Secretary stated that no specific discussion on the subject took place during the talks.
However, he added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi did discuss broader cooperation across air, land, and sea defence systems as part of strengthening bilateral strategic ties.
Foreign Secretary Misri further noted that specific proposals or detailed discussions, including the one referenced, may be taken up at an appropriate time in the future, as defence cooperation between the two countries continues to deepen.
The Mogami-class warships are Japan’s latest generation of multi-role frigates, developed for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) to enhance maritime security and strengthen naval capabilities in an increasingly complex Indo-Pacific environment.
