Tokyo: Senior Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP from Thiruvananthapuram, Shashi Tharoor, visited the Indian Embassy in Tokyo during his visit to Japan, where he was received by Chargé d’Affaires R. Madhusudan.
Sharing his Japan Visit outcome on social media ‘X’, Tharoor said he was welcomed at the embassy in the absence of Ambassador Nagma Mallick, who is currently in New Delhi in connection with Japanese Prime Minister’s visit to India.
The Congress MP, accompanied by a delegation from O.P. Jindal Global University, gathered on the embassy’s terrace overlooking the Imperial Gardens for a group photograph before attending a reception hosted for presidents of leading Japanese universities. The interaction formed part of Tharoor’s engagements in Japan, focusing on strengthening academic exchanges and fostering closer people-to-people ties between India and Japan.
In addition to this Congress leader had an interaction on India-Japan relations at the Japanese Parliament (Diet) yesterday, attended by several MPs from across the political spectrum , including a former PM, former State Minister for Foreign Affairs, former Finance Minister and three former Education Ministers. Mr. Tharoor said that the need for translation slightly slowed down the lively discussion, but there was no doubt about the real level of interest in India and in strengthening our two countries’ involvement with each other.
He said that ” It’s fascinating to see that despite the Diet being in session (the voting bell rang just after our meeting finished) there such an impressive turnout of MPs in our Committee room for a visit by what was essentially, despite my presence, a University delegation. The case for more Parliamentary diplomacy in our bilateral relations, made evident in the aftermath of #OperationSindoor, was reinforced for me yesterday. “
