New Delhi : Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal responded to recent remarks made by Khalilur Rahman following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s victory in the West Bengal Assembly Elections, emphasizing the importance of cooperation between India and Bangladesh on issues related to illegal immigration and nationality verification.
Addressing the media, Randhir Jaiswal stated that India had taken note of the comments made in recent days and said they should be viewed in the broader context of the ongoing issue concerning the repatriation of illegal Bangladeshi nationals residing in India.
He noted that the repatriation process requires active cooperation from Bangladesh, particularly in verifying the nationality of individuals identified as illegal immigrants. According to the MEA spokesperson, more than 2,860 cases related to nationality verification are currently pending with Bangladeshi authorities, with several cases awaiting resolution for over five years.
India expressed the expectation that Bangladesh would expedite the verification process to facilitate the smooth and timely repatriation of illegal immigrants. The statement underscored the importance of coordinated efforts and administrative cooperation between the two neighbouring countries in addressing cross-border migration-related concerns.
The remarks come amid ongoing diplomatic engagement between India and Bangladesh on issues concerning border management, migration, and bilateral cooperation.
