New Delhi: The government has informed that recruitment to the Indian Administrative Service and Indian Police Service is being carried out in accordance with prescribed reservation policies, with no backlog vacancies currently pending in either service. This information was given by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, and Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
As per official data, a fixed intake of 180 candidates has been maintained annually for the IAS through the Civil Services Examination since 2012. Of these, 4 per cent of the vacancies are reserved for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD).
The government stated that appointments are made based on reservation guidelines, ensuring due representation for candidates belonging to SC, ST, and OBC categories. Details of category-wise appointments over the past five years (CSE 2020–2024) have been compiled separately.
Recruitment through the Civil Services Examination, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission, is a continuous process, with vacancies assessed regularly and filled accordingly.
The statement further clarified that, as of now, there are no backlog vacancies in the IAS, and similarly, no backlog reserved posts exist in the IPS as on January 1, 2025.
The Government has released cadre-wise details of sanctioned strength, officers in position, and vacancies in the Indian Administrative Service and Indian Police Service as on January 1, 2025, along with category-wise recruitment data over the last five years.
Overall Strength and Vacancies:
As per the data, the total sanctioned strength stands at 6,877 for IAS and 5,099 for IPS. Against this, 5,577 IAS officers and 4,594 IPS officers are currently in position, indicating vacancies across various cadres.
Cadre-wise Position:
Among major states, Uttar Pradesh has the highest sanctioned strength with 652 IAS and 541 IPS posts, followed by Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu.
The AGMUT cadre also accounts for a significant share, with 542 IAS and 457 IPS sanctioned posts.
Several states, including Bihar, Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Gujarat, show notable gaps between sanctioned strength and officers in position, reflecting ongoing recruitment needs.
Category-wise Recruitment (CSE 2020–2024):
Recruitment through the Civil Services Examination, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission, continues to ensure representation across categories.
- IAS: 245 OBC, 135 SC, and 67 ST candidates appointed
- IPS: 255 OBC, 141 SC, and 71 ST candidates appointed
Reservation and Recruitment Process:
The Government reiterated that recruitment to IAS and IPS is conducted in accordance with reservation norms. The process remains continuous, with vacancies assessed regularly and filled accordingly.
No Backlog Vacancies:
It has been clarified that there are no backlog vacancies in the IAS, and similarly, no backlog reserved posts exist in the IPS as on January 1, 2025.
