- A major step towards increasing citizen participation • Local-level monitoring of development work will be strengthened in each ward
Gurugram : A special meeting of the House was held at the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram office, chaired by Mayor Rajrani Malhotra, in which the proposal to form ward committees in all wards of the city was unanimously approved. A consensus was also reached on opening bank accounts for the ward committees.

This decision is an important initiative towards making municipal administration more effective and participatory at the local level in Gurugram.
Work will be done as per the provisions of the law
Ward committees have been formed in accordance with the provisions of the Haryana Municipal Citizens Participation Act, 2008. This Act provides for the inclusion of Area Sabha representatives and nominated members from various sections to ensure citizen participation at the ward level. Its objective is to ensure local resolution of local problems at the local level.
Councilors will be Chairpersons in Every Ward
As per the structure, the elected councilor of each ward has been appointed as the chairperson of the respective ward committee. Representatives from various sections of society, including women, Scheduled Castes, and Backward Classes, have also been included to ensure the committees function in an inclusive manner. This structure is in accordance with the social representation prescribed in the Act.
Development works will be monitored at the ward level
The primary role of the ward committees will be to prioritize development projects at the local level, monitor sanitation, and identify issues related to streetlights, roads, water, sewerage, and other civic amenities, and escalate them to the Municipal Corporation. The committees will hold regular meetings to discuss regional issues and coordinate with relevant departments to ensure solutions.
Initiative to Increase Transparency and Accountability
Ward Committees will serve as a strong link between citizens and the Municipal Corporation. This will improve monitoring of development projects, tailor plans to local needs, and enhance transparency and accountability. This system will promote public participation-based urban governance and provide a new direction for Gurugram’s overall development.
Mayor Rajrani Malhotra stated that the formation of ward committees will help prioritize development plans at the local level. This initiative will establish direct communication between citizens and the Municipal Corporation, enabling faster resolution of problems. The Mayor stated that public participation is crucial for the city’s development, and ward committees will serve as an effective platform for this.
Municipal Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya stated that ward committees will serve as a strong means of coordination between the administration and citizens. Through these, regional problems can be identified, development work monitored, and issues related to basic amenities like sanitation, drainage, roads, and streetlights can be resolved in a more systematic manner. He said that work will be reviewed through regular meetings, ensuring transparency and accountability.
