-India and Ethiopia to Deepen Strategic Partnership
New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali, Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, in New Delhi today on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit being hosted by India under its chairship.
The two leaders reviewed the progress of the bilateral Strategic Partnership and discussed ways to further expand cooperation in key areas, including economic engagement, trade and investment, defence and security, capacity building and development cooperation. The meeting builds on Prime Minister Modi’s historic visit to Addis Ababa in December 2025, during which India and Ethiopia elevated their long-standing relationship to a Strategic Partnership. India and Ethiopia share a long-standing diplomatic relationship, with formal diplomatic ties established in 1948. Over the decades, the two countries have developed close political, economic and people-to-people relations, with India playing an important role in Ethiopia’s development through capacity-building programmes, education, training and technical cooperation. Trade and economic cooperation have also emerged as an important pillar of the relationship. Bilateral trade covers pharmaceuticals, machinery, engineering products, agricultural commodities and other goods. According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, total India-Ethiopia trade stood at approximately US$550.19 million in 2024–25, reflecting the continuing scope for expanding commercial ties and investment. During today’s meeting, Modi and Abiy also exchanged views on regional and international developments of mutual interest and reaffirmed their commitment to working closely in multilateral forums.
Prime Minister Modi appreciated Ethiopia’s participation in the 18th BRICS Summit, noting that its presence further strengthens the collective voice of the Global South.
