New Delhi: The Department of Posts on Tuesday released a Commemorative Postage Stamp to mark the birth centenary of renowned artist, architect, sculptor, muralist and writer Padma Vibhushan awardee late Satish Gujral. The stamp was unveiled during a special ceremony at Bikaner House, New Delhi, by Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya M. Scindia.
The event was attended by Director General, Postal Services Jitendra Gupta, Chief Postmaster General, Delhi Circle Col. Akhilesh Kumar Pandey, eminent painter and Padma Bhushan awardee Jatin Das, former Director General of the National Gallery of Modern Art Dr. Rajeev Lochan, Raseel Gujral Ansal, members of the Gujral family, and other distinguished guests.
Scindia Hails Satish Gujral’s Enduring Legacy
Addressing the gathering, Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia described Satish Gujral as a creative genius whose life embodied resilience, innovation and artistic excellence. He highlighted Gujral’s extraordinary achievements as a painter, sculptor, architect, muralist and writer, saying that his works continue to inspire generations in India and across the world.
The Minister also recalled Gujral’s long association with the Department of Posts, noting that he not only created iconic works of art but also designed postage stamps that transformed complex ideas into compelling visual narratives.
Referring to the commemorative stamp issued on the 125th anniversary of VSNL, Scindia said Gujral had brilliantly translated the concept of communication into powerful visual imagery. Similarly, his design for the Financial Inclusion stamp effectively portrayed themes of progress, empowerment and national development through symbolic artistic expression.
‘Postage Stamps Carry the Soul of Our Country’
Highlighting the significance of postage stamps, Scindia said they are small in size but carry the spirit, history and cultural heritage of India.
“Postage stamps are very small in size, but they carry the soul of our country. They carry the passion of 140 crore people, travelling from city to city, village to village, taluk to taluk, carrying India’s history, culture and collective memories across generations,” the Minister said.
He expressed confidence that the commemorative stamp would preserve Satish Gujral’s remarkable legacy and inspire future generations of artists and creators.
Stamp Design Celebrates Gujral’s Artistic Vision
The commemorative stamp features a portrait of late Satish Gujral seated with a paintbrush in hand, symbolising his lifelong dedication to art and creativity. Designed against a vibrant backdrop inspired by his signature artistic style in rich shades of purple and blue, the stamp reflects the depth, versatility and creative brilliance that defined his work.
The stamp has been designed by Anuj Kumar based on a proposal submitted by Raseel Gujral Ansal.

A recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, late Satish Gujral was one of India’s most celebrated creative luminaries. His distinguished career, spanning more than seven decades, left an indelible mark on Indian art, architecture and culture. Through this commemorative postage stamp, the Department of Posts pays tribute to his exceptional life, achievements and enduring contribution to India’s cultural heritage.
