MoRTH Boosts Highway Safety with Advanced Truck Mounted Attenuators

New Delhi: As the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) accelerates the expansion of National Highways across India, the focus is increasingly shifting beyond faster connectivity to ensuring world-class safety standards. The ministry’s approach underscores that modern infrastructure development is not only about building wider roads, but also about safeguarding every life that uses them.

At the core of this safety-driven vision is the deployment of advanced systems such as Truck Mounted Attenuators (TMAs), which are being introduced across multiple highway stretches. These globally recognized safety solutions are playing a crucial role in protecting both highway users and on-ground workers engaged in construction and maintenance activities.

Highway work zones remain among the most vulnerable areas, where high-speed traffic and limited visibility often pose serious risks. Recognizing this challenge, MoRTH has consistently encouraged concessionaires to adopt innovative safety measures. In line with this directive, a concessionaire managing nine National Highway projects—covering a total stretch of 681 kilometres across Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat—has implemented TMAs equipped with integrated wig-wag warning systems, marking a significant advancement in road safety practices.

Truck Mounted Attenuators are impact-absorbing devices designed to act as protective barriers during collisions. By absorbing and dissipating kinetic energy, these systems significantly reduce the force of impact, thereby safeguarding maintenance crews working ahead, lowering injury risks for drivers, and minimizing the severity of accidents in work zones. In effect, TMAs serve as a critical buffer between fast-moving traffic and vulnerable personnel on the road.

Adding to their effectiveness, these TMAs are fitted with high-intensity wig-wag warning lights that flash in alternating patterns, guiding approaching drivers with clear directional signals. This feature proves particularly valuable on high-speed corridors, during night-time operations, and in conditions of low visibility such as fog, helping prevent accidents before they occur.

The scale of deployment reflects a strong commitment to safety. Across the nine highway projects, a total of 33 TMAs and 15 towable TMAs have been installed. All units adhere to globally accepted safety benchmarks, including MASH Test Level-3 and NCHRP 350 Test Level-3 standards, and are engineered to withstand impacts at speeds of up to 100 km/h.

This initiative demonstrates how policy intent is being translated into tangible outcomes on the ground. By integrating global best practices into highway development, MoRTH and its partners are reinforcing the idea that infrastructure growth must go hand in hand with safety.

As India’s highway network continues to expand rapidly, the emphasis on protective technologies like TMAs highlights an evolving infrastructure philosophy—one where progress is measured not just by speed and scale, but by safer journeys, protected workers, and lives saved.
