Kolkata : West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday alleged that the harassment of judicial officers in Malda district was part of a “joint conspiracy” involving the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Election Commission of India.

Addressing a public rally in Sagardighi, Murshidabad, she claimed that the incident was aimed at creating conditions for the imposition of President’s Rule in the state. Banerjee urged people not to fall prey to provocation, stressing the need to maintain peace and protect the state’s democratic process.

She noted that with the Model Code of Conduct in force, administrative powers are limited, but emphasised that ensuring the safety of judicial officers remains the responsibility of the Election Commission.

The Chief Minister also acknowledged concerns regarding the removal of certain names from electoral rolls, calling them genuine grievances, but appealed to citizens to avoid agitation and maintain restraint.

Without directly naming individuals, Banerjee hinted at the possible involvement of other political players, including the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen led by Asaduddin Owaisi, suggesting that external elements may have played a role in inciting unrest.

She further alleged that attempts were made to provoke people into blocking roads and confronting judicial officers, warning that such actions ultimately undermine democratic institutions and processes.
