New Delhi /Pune : Pune’s public transport is set for a major boost as the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved two new metro lines under Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project. Line 4 (Kharadi–Hadapsar–Swargate–Khadakwasla) and Line 4A (Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug) were cleared today, following the earlier approval of Line 2A (Vanaz–Chandani Chowk) and Line 2B (Ramwadi–Wagholi/Vitthalwadi).

Together, Line 4 and 4A will cover 31.636 km with 28 elevated stations, connecting IT hubs, commercial areas, schools, colleges, and residential neighborhoods across East, South, and West Pune. The project is expected to be completed within five years at an estimated cost of ₹9,857.85 crore, funded jointly by the Government of India, Government of Maharashtra, and external funding agencies.

These new lines are a key part of Pune’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) and will connect seamlessly with existing and planned metro corridors at Kharadi Bypass & Nal Stop (Line 2) and Swargate (Line 1). They will also offer an interchange at Hadapsar Railway Station and link to future corridors toward Loni Kalbhor and Saswad Road, creating smooth connectivity across metro, rail, and bus networks.

Line 4 and 4A will link Kharadi IT Park with Khadakwasla’s scenic areas and connect Hadapsar’s industrial hub with Warje’s residential neighborhoods. The lines will pass through major roads like Solapur Road, Magarpatta Road, Sinhagad Road, Karve Road, and the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway. The project aims to reduce traffic congestion, improve safety, and promote greener, sustainable travel.

Daily ridership on Line 4 and 4A is projected to reach 4.09 lakh in 2028, growing to nearly 7 lakh in 2038, 9.63 lakh in 2048, and over 11.7 lakh in 2058. The Kharadi–Khadakwasla corridor is expected to serve 3.23 lakh passengers in 2028 and 9.33 lakh by 2058, while the Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug line will rise from 85,555 to 2.41 lakh passengers in the same period.

The project will be executed by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro), responsible for all civil, electrical, mechanical, and systems work. Pre-construction activities, including surveys and design consultancy, are already underway.

With this approval, Pune Metro’s network will expand beyond 100 km, marking a significant step toward a modern, integrated, and sustainable urban transit system.

Line 4 and 4A will give Pune faster, greener, and more connected travel options. They aim to save commuters time, reduce traffic, and provide a safe, reliable, and affordable alternative, shaping the future of Pune’s urban mobility.
