Initiative aims to involve Delhi University students and create sustained public awareness to prevent Yamuna pollution
New Delhi: Delhi Cabinet Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said that preparations are underway to expand the ‘Yamuna Praharis’ programme into a large-scale public campaign involving thousands of students and citizens.
Addressing a meeting of the initiative, the Minister said 75 students from 30 colleges of Delhi University participated in the programme. He said the initiative would now be expanded to connect thousands of students with efforts aimed at protecting and restoring the Yamuna.
According to Singh, registration for the Yamuna Praharis programme will begin from October 1, while around 35,000 Yamuna Praharis are expected to become part of the public campaign on October 18.
He said the objective of the initiative extends beyond merely cleaning the Yamuna. The programme seeks to create long-term public awareness and community participation so that pollution of the river can be prevented from recurring.
The meeting was attended by Delhi BJP General Secretary Mohan Lal Gehra, Delhi Poorvanchal Morcha President Santosh Ojha, officials of the Poorvanchal Morcha and three Assistant Professors from Delhi University.
The initiative is aimed at encouraging greater participation of young people and local communities in efforts to protect the Yamuna and promote sustained behavioural change towards the river and its surrounding environment.
