New Delhi : The Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) has directed city gas distribution companies to conduct strict safety checks at CNG stations across the Delhi-National Capital Region. The advisory follows a recent accident involving CNG cylinders at an Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) retail outlet in Delhi, in which three people died and two others were injured.
In its official notice, PESO advised all city gas distribution companies to display prominent safety signage at their retail outlets stating:
The notice further directed the companies to ensure that CNG is dispensed only into approved types of cylinders carrying a valid hydro-test certificate.
PESO also asked the companies to strictly comply with the provisions of the Gas Cylinders Rules, 2016, as well as the conditions attached to licences issued in Form-G under the rules.
The advisory instructed city gas distribution companies to sensitise and train employees and managers posted at CNG stations about the applicable safety requirements. They were also asked to ensure that the rules are followed during cylinder inspections and while dispensing CNG to vehicles.
A hydro-test is a safety examination conducted to assess the structural integrity of a gas cylinder and determine whether it remains fit for use under pressure. The validity of the test is an important safety requirement for cylinders used at CNG stations.
The latest directions are aimed at preventing the use of unsafe or unauthorised cylinders and strengthening safety compliance at CNG retail outlets across Delhi-NCR.
