New Delhi : External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar attended the valedictory ceremony of the induction training programme for the 2025 batch of Indian Foreign Service officer-trainees and Bhutanese diplomats.
The ceremony marked the completion of the trainees’ initial phase of diplomatic training and provided an opportunity to recognise their academic and professional progress. The programme brought together young diplomats, senior officials and faculty members involved in their training.
The induction programme is conducted by the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service (SSIFS) in New Delhi. It is designed to prepare officers for the wide-ranging responsibilities of diplomatic service and includes classroom instruction, practical exposure and interaction with experienced diplomats.
During the training, officer-trainees are introduced to subjects such as:
- India’s foreign policy and international relations;
- International law and negotiations;
- Economic and commercial diplomacy;
- Security and strategic affairs;
- Diplomatic protocol and consular work;
- Language and communication skills; and
- The functioning of Indian diplomatic missions abroad.
The trainees may also receive exposure to different divisions of the Ministry of External Affairs and other institutions. This helps them understand the practical aspects of policy formulation, diplomatic engagement, international cooperation and public service before they take up their future assignments.
The participation of Bhutanese diplomats reflects the close and longstanding relationship between India and Bhutan. Training and professional exchanges between the two countries contribute to stronger institutional links and promote the sharing of experience in diplomacy, administration and international engagement.
Addressing the young officers, Dr Jaishankar said that the cohort would become part of India’s journey towards Viksit Bharat. He encouraged them to understand contemporary global challenges, cultivate a service-oriented approach, immerse themselves in their areas of specialisation and remain passionate about their profession.
The External Affairs Minister emphasised that modern diplomacy requires continuous learning, professional discipline, cultural awareness and the ability to respond to complex global developments. He also urged the officer-trainees to uphold the values of public service while representing the interests of their respective countries.
Dr Jaishankar extended his best wishes to the young officers and Bhutanese diplomats as they begin the next stage of their diplomatic careers.
