New Delhi (Parliament Monsoon Session 2026): Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said that the party had sought a discussion on the NEET examination issue under Rule 267 in the Upper House but alleged that the request was not accepted.
Speaking to the media, Kharge said that the Opposition had submitted a notice under Rule 267 and approached the Chairman seeking permission for a discussion, but was told that the issue could be raised under another rule.
Kharge said, “I told them that the importance of the discussion would not remain the same under another rule. Just as an adjournment motion holds importance in the Lok Sabha, Rule 267 has similar significance in the Rajya Sabha.”
He added that the Opposition has been raising the demand for the last two to three days and insisted that the matter requires a detailed discussion in Parliament.
Kharge also raised concerns over the alleged treatment of Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra during protests.
He alleged that both leaders were insulted and questioned how a woman Member of Parliament could be kept at a police station until 9 PM.
“Whatever treatment was meted out to them is shameful,” Kharge said, criticising the handling of the Opposition’s protest.
The Congress leader reiterated that the Opposition would continue demanding a discussion on the NEET issue and raising concerns related to students, parliamentary procedures, and democratic rights.
