New Delhi : Government e Marketplace (GeM) is observing its Incorporation Day 2026, marking its continued role as a key digital platform for transparent, efficient and technology-driven public procurement in India.
The GeM Special Purpose Vehicle (GeM SPV), a Section 8 non-profit company under the Ministry of Commerce, was incorporated on May 17, 2017, under the Companies Act, 2013, to develop and manage the GeM platform. Since its inception, GeM has evolved into a major digital procurement ecosystem, enhancing ease of doing business and expanding market access for sellers across the country.
Aligned with the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, Vocal for Local and Viksit Bharat 2047, the platform continues to promote domestic manufacturing and service providers by linking them with government procurement opportunities. It enables participation from Class-1 local suppliers across sectors such as pharmaceuticals, construction equipment, textiles, transportation, furniture and medical consumables.
Currently, GeM hosts over 1.36 lakh government buyers and nearly 25 lakh sellers and service providers, with around 72% of active sellers being Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs). During FY 2025–26, more than 11 lakh MSEs on the platform received over 51 lakh orders worth ₹2.36 lakh crore.
Women-led MSEs secured procurement orders worth over ₹28,000 crore, while SC/ST entrepreneurs received orders exceeding ₹6,000 crore. Startups on the platform recorded orders worth more than ₹19,000 crore, reflecting the platform’s role in promoting inclusive growth and entrepreneurship.
GeM CEO Shri Mihir Kumar said the platform was created to build a transparent, efficient and inclusive procurement system for government buyers and continues to strengthen India’s vision of self-reliance by connecting domestic enterprises to public procurement opportunities.
As part of the Incorporation Day celebrations, GeM is organising a series of stakeholder engagement initiatives. The celebrations began with a Vendor Assessment Workshop held on May 15, 2026, aimed at improving understanding of vendor assessment processes and documentation requirements for OEMs.
GeM will also host “GeM Manthan” on May 21, 2026, under the theme “Enriching the GeM Marketplace” to discuss ecosystem strengthening. A brainstorming session with Defence Services will be held on May 22, 2026 to explore process improvements and technology-driven solutions to better align procurement systems with defence requirements.
