New Delhi : The Indian Navy ship INS Sunayna reached Malé on April 6, 2026, marking its first stop under the Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) SAGAR mission. The ship was warmly welcomed by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), showing strong ties between India and the Maldives.

Two MNDF personnel are also part of the ship’s multinational crew. During the journey, the crew carried out training exercises such as seamanship, small arms practice, and emergency drills to improve coordination and readiness.

After arrival, G. Balasubramanian, India’s High Commissioner to the Maldives, visited the ship and interacted with the crew. Various professional, social, and sports activities are planned during the visit to strengthen cooperation. A joint naval exercise (PASSEX) with the MNDF Coast Guard will also take place when the ship departs.

The IOS SAGAR mission includes crew members from 16 friendly countries and is aimed at strengthening maritime cooperation in the Indian Ocean region. It supports India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy and the MAHASAGAR vision for regional security and growth.

The ship was flagged off from Mumbai on April 2, 2026, by Sanjay Seth, Minister of State for Defence. The mission highlights India’s commitment to stronger maritime partnerships with neighbouring countries.
