Kolkata: The West Bengal Government has initiated the process of identifying land for the proposed Kalyani Greenfield Airport in Nadia district, a planned aviation project aimed at easing the growing pressure on Kolkata Airport and improving air connectivity across South Bengal.
Around 2,000 acres of land spread across nine mouzas have been identified for the proposed airport, including areas around Kalyani and Birpara. The move marks an initial step towards developing the new aviation facility in the region.
The proposed airport was announced in the West Bengal Budget 2026 as part of the state’s efforts to expand its aviation infrastructure and provide additional capacity for the Kolkata region.
The planned facility is expected to serve as an additional aviation hub for the wider region, helping accommodate future passenger and air-traffic growth and reducing the load on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport.
The proposed site is located close to NH-12 and around 60 km from Kolkata Airport, according to reports. Its location is also expected to improve connectivity for Nadia and other parts of South Bengal.
The airport project is being envisaged as a greenfield aviation facility, with the government examining the land requirement and other aspects before moving towards detailed planning and implementation. Further steps are expected to include assessment of the site, preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) and determination of the development and construction framework.
Improved air connectivity through Kalyani could also support regional activity in sectors such as business, tourism, healthcare, education and logistics. Kalyani is already home to important institutions, including AIIMS Kalyani, adding to the area’s wider regional significance.
The proposed Kalyani Greenfield Airport is thus being planned as part of West Bengal’s broader effort to strengthen aviation infrastructure and create additional air-connectivity capacity for Kolkata and South Bengal.
