New Delhi: Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu chaired a high-level review meeting with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood, the Chief Secretary, DG NDRF, Commissioner of Police, Delhi, and other senior officials to review building safety, student accommodation and paying guest (PG) regulations across the national capital.
The meeting stressed the need for strict enforcement against unsafe buildings, clear accountability of concerned institutions and officials, and stronger mechanisms to prevent incidents involving structurally unsafe properties.
The LG also directed the establishment of an emergency mechanism under the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) to ensure swift grievance redressal and effective coordination during emergencies and crises.
The Urban Development Minister, GNCTD, has been directed to head a committee comprising senior officials from relevant departments. The committee will review the existing institutional guidelines governing PG accommodations and examine measures to improve safety and regulatory compliance.
The committee will also explore alternative accommodation options for students through universities, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).
The meeting further discussed the feasibility of utilising unoccupied DDA housing stock for student accommodation, with the objective of expanding safe and regulated housing options for students in Delhi.
The directions come amid heightened concerns over building safety and student accommodation standards in the capital, with the administration emphasising stronger enforcement, institutional accountability and faster emergency response.
