New Delhi: NSUI President Vinod Jakhar has strongly criticised the Delhi government over the building collapse in Satya Niketan near Delhi University’s South Campus, alleging serious lapses in the immediate rescue response.
Jakhar claimed that when NSUI workers reached the spot following the collapse, there was allegedly no police team, rescue team, fire brigade or medical personnel present at the site. He said NSUI workers themselves managed to pull three students out of the rubble.
Questioning the government over the safety of students in Delhi, Jakhar asked, “Until when will students keep paying the price for the government’s corruption with their lives?”
He further questioned why the government was allegedly turning a blind eye to incidents involving students and residents in the national capital.
“Such incidents keep happening every other day in Delhi. Why is the government turning a blind eye?” Jakhar said.
Referring to other incidents in the city, he said, “Sometimes water floods the basement, sometimes a fire breaks out in a coaching centre. For a few days, there is a pretence of action, and then the culprits get a clean chit.”
Jakhar demanded accountability from the authorities and questioned whether adequate safety measures were being enforced in areas housing large numbers of students.
The Satya Niketan incident occurred on Sunday afternoon when a multi-storey building used as student accommodation collapsed. Rescue operations involving the Delhi Fire Services, police and disaster-response teams are underway, with several people feared trapped under the debris.
