New Delhi: Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri highlighted a major initiative to develop integrated Compressed Biogas (CBG) and Waste-to-Energy projects in Haryana, with projects planned across Gurugram, Faridabad, Hisar and Ambala.

Puri thanked Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Union Minister Rao Inderjit Singh for their support towards the MoUs signed between OIL Green Energy Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Oil India Limited, and the four municipal bodies of Haryana.

Under the initiative, the four projects will collectively process around 5,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste every day through scientific waste-management systems. The projects are expected to generate approximately 70–75 tonnes per day of Compressed Biogas, along with nearly 50 MW of green power.

The initiative is aligned with the GOBARdhan scheme of 2026 and reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of converting waste into productive resources while strengthening India’s clean-energy ecosystem.

The projects will follow a resource-recovery approach by processing the wet biodegradable component of municipal waste into CBG, while converting the non-recyclable dry waste fraction into green electricity. This model is expected to address multiple challenges simultaneously, including waste disposal, urban cleanliness, clean-energy generation and efficient utilisation of resources.

According to Puri, the initiative will contribute to the objectives of Swachh Bharat and Waste-to-Wealth, while supporting India’s transition towards a gas-based and circular economy.

The projects are also expected to demonstrate how modern waste-management technologies can transform large quantities of municipal waste into indigenous clean energy, reduce the burden on landfills and create a more sustainable urban ecosystem.

The Haryana initiative represents a significant step towards turning municipal waste into an energy resource, combining cleaner cities, renewable power, domestic CBG production and resource recovery under one integrated model.
