Gurugram : Construction work on the Gurugram Metro Expansion project has reached an important milestone with the successful installation of the project’s first 160-tonne pre-tensioned U-girder. The U-girder was lifted and placed near Cyber Park, between Pillar Nos. 26 and 27, with the assistance of hydraulic cranes having lifting capacities of 400 tonnes and 600 tonnes. Industry and Commerce Minister Rao Narbir Singh performed the puja to mark the beginning of this significant construction phase.

- Width: 5.05 metres
- Weight: 160 tonnes
- Reinforcement steel: Approximately 16 tonnes
- Concrete: Around 60 cubic metres of M-60 grade concrete
The pre-tensioned U-girder will form part of the elevated metro viaduct. Metro tracks will be laid on top of this structure once the viaduct is completed.
Background of the Gurugram Metro Expansion Project
The Gurugram Metro Expansion project is being developed to improve connectivity between Old Gurugram, New Gurugram and major commercial centres in the city.
The main corridor will extend for approximately 28.5 kilometres, connecting Millennium City Centre with Cyber City. The project also includes a 1.85-kilometre spur from Basai Village to Sector 101 near Dwarka Expressway.
The expanded network is expected to include 27 elevated stations and a connection to the metro depot. The alignment will serve several important residential, commercial and industrial areas, including :
- Sector 45;
- Cyber Park;
- Subhash Chowk;
- Hero Honda Chowk;
- Sector 10;
- Basai Village;
- Palam Vihar;
- Udyog Vihar; and
- Cyber City.
The corridor will connect with the Delhi Metro Yellow Line at Millennium City Centre and is also planned to integrate with the existing Rapid Metro network near Cyber City. This integration is expected to make daily travel more convenient for commuters moving between Gurugram, Delhi and surrounding business districts.
The Union Cabinet approved the project in June 2023 at an estimated cost of approximately ₹5,452 crore. It is being implemented by Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL), a 50:50 joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Haryana.
The project is expected to provide direct and reliable public transport access to major employment hubs, including Udyog Vihar and Cyber City, while improving connectivity to rapidly developing residential sectors and areas around Dwarka Expressway.
Focus on Connectivity, Quality and Safety
Rao Narbir Singh said that the installation of the first U-girder marked an important step towards better connectivity and modern public transport in Gurugram. He added that while construction was progressing rapidly, due attention was also being given to quality control and safety standards.
Once completed, the expanded metro network is expected to reduce pressure on major roads, improve last-mile connectivity and provide commuters with a smoother alternative to road-based transport.
The installation of the first U-girder marks another major step towards a better-connected, more accessible and more developed Gurugram.
