New Delhi : Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging the Centre to extend immediate humanitarian and comprehensive disaster-relief assistance to Nepal, which is witnessing devastating floods.
In his letter, Kharge expressed concern over the loss of lives, destruction of homes and infrastructure, and the displacement of people caused by the floods. He said the scale of the disaster required urgent and coordinated assistance.
Kharge urged the Ministry of Home Affairs to consider the immediate deployment of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams to Nepal, in coordination with the Government of Nepal. He said the teams could assist with rescue operations, evacuation of affected people and the delivery of relief to communities in the flood-hit areas.
The Congress president highlighted the close and enduring bond between the people of India and Nepal. Referring to the humanitarian crisis, he said India must stand firmly with its neighbouring country and extend every possible form of assistance to the people affected by the floods.
Kharge also noted that the NDRF’s expertise and experience in responding to natural disasters could provide valuable support in efforts to save lives and deliver urgent relief.
He appealed to the Ministry of Home Affairs to treat the matter with urgency and undertake all necessary steps to extend India’s assistance to the flood-affected people of Nepal.
