Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Sitharaman Meets OMERS CEO in Toronto, Invites More Investment in India

New Delhi/Toronto : Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met Blake Hutcheson, President and Chief Executive Officer of OMERS, in Toronto on Thursday and discussed opportunities to expand the Canadian pension fund’s long-term investments in India.

During the meeting, Sitharaman acknowledged OMERS’ continued confidence in the Indian economy and encouraged the institution to deepen its engagement with the country. She highlighted the potential for further investment in sectors linked to India’s economic growth, expanding middle class and infrastructure requirements.

The discussions covered investment opportunities in:

  • Transportation;
  • Power transmission;
  • Renewable energy;
  • Urban infrastructure;
  • Logistics; and
  • Real estate.

Sitharaman highlighted India’s investor-friendly policy environment, greater tax certainty and ongoing economic reforms. She encouraged OMERS to explore new partnerships and investment opportunities across sectors and regions in the country.

The meeting also focused on strengthening OMERS’ presence in India and broadening its engagement beyond its existing investments in infrastructure and real estate.

The government said the interaction reflected India’s efforts to attract long-term institutional capital for infrastructure development and other priority sectors.
